Beach Day commemorates the July 1, 1999, merger of the Towns of Yaupon Beach and Long Beach into what is today known as the Town of Oak Island. It is held each year on July 1st, unless that falls on a Sunday, in which case it is observed on the Saturday before. Beach Day is filled with fun and family-friendly activities organized by the Oak Island Recreation Department, with some events often held in collaboration with the North Carolina 4th of July Festival in neighboring Southport, NC, celebrating our nation's Independence Day.

WEATHER STATEMENT

1:00 PM UPDATE:

  • The Karaoke Contest has been CANCELLED
  • The Inflatables / bounce houses have ENDED for the day
  • The Sandcastle Competition has ENDED EARLY

All other events remain scheduled as planned at this time.

ANY CHANGES WILL BE UPDATED ON THE TOWN OF OAK ISLAND WEBSITE, SO CHECK / REFRESH THAT PAGE OFTEN.

FIREWORKS & TRAFFIC INFORMATION

As stated, unless noted otherwise on the Beach Day page, the scheduled FIREWORKS DISPLAY, performed from the Oak Island Pier will proceed as planned.

The Oak Island Police Department will maintain traffic control after the display, and providers the following Traffic Reminders:

  • Remember to USE BOTH BRIDGES – even if returning to neighboring Southport, using the Swains Cut bridge to E.F. Middleton Blvd. can actually make for faster travel
  • Stay on E Oak Island Drive – trying to use Beach Dr., Yacht Dr., Ocean Dr. for a “shortcut” only slows everything else down when you will eventually have to merge back onto E Oak Island Drive later.
  • When exiting the Island, Avoid Distraction & keep traffic moving! You can post your videos / pics along with everyone else when you get home
  • Paid Parking will NOT be charged for this event
  • Right-of-Way (ROW) will be allowed, however all vehicle tires must be completely off of the street
  • All parking is “first come, first served” - so no “reserving” or holding your spaces please!
  • Ocean Dr. will be CLOSED at 6:00 PM from Barbee Blvd to Keziah St

By working together to pay attention, have a little patience, and use a little kindness, everyone can get home in a safe & swift fashion!

Provided below is a Graphic Map, with traffic reminders that can be printed or shared on social media:
