Oceanfront

The most popular area for short term rentals! No residential structures can be built between these vacation rentals and the ocean, and nearly all have views of the Atlantic Ocean. As the islands dunes are constantly reshaped by the forces of nature, these rentals may or may not have a view of the beach from the property. Beach access is often direct, but some rentals require the use of a public beach access. The distance to the beach can range from a short jaunt on a beach path to upwards of 250 yards along a private walkway that crosses a marsh.

Ocean View

Ocean view rentals are located up to 400 yards from the closest beach access, with many located along the second row back from the ocean. Views of the Atlantic Ocean range from unobstructed to partially obstructed. In some cases ocean view rentals can be closer to a beach access than oceanfront rentals (those with lengthy private walkways or beach paths).

Beachwalk

The majority of beachwalk homes and condos are within walking distance of the beach. Many of these homes can be found along Dolphin Drive, Pelican Drive and the streets that run north to south in what was historically known as Yaupon Beach. These rentals range from Caswell Beach condos with distant ocean views to homes on quiet residential streets with no views of the ocean.

Woodlands

These vacation rentals are located within a short drive of the nearest beach access and are found in the interior wooded section of Oak Island. These can be a great option for the vacationer looking to stay near a public boat ramp for quick access to area fishing and kayaking.

Waterways

When searching for the ideal vacation rental for your group, don't forget there are homes with waterfront locations besides those along the Atlantic Ocean. Search for a home along the Intracoastal Waterway, where many rentals feature private docks perfect for casting a line or tying up a boat. Vacation rentals along Davis Canal offer a great jumping off point for adventures by kayak or paddleboard.

Southport

A small group of vacation rentals are found in the heart of or on the outskirts of historic downtown Southport. These homes are approximately a 15 minute drive from the east end of Oak Island and select properties have views of the Cape Fear River. Stay here to see why Southport was named “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living magazine.
