New Year’s Lantern Fest
Date: Jan. 1, 2026

One of Oak Island’s most beloved traditions is the New Year’s Day Lantern Fest. This community-led event has quickly become one of our favorite holiday celebrations on the island.
The parade began in 2023, thanks to local residents Melanie Hartung and Carrie Weston Lenzen. Inspired by a lantern festival held each fall in South Carolina, the duo decided to bring something similar to Oak Island. This year will be the 4th annual Lantern Fest on Oak Island.
The parade is entirely family-friendly and free to attend. You can be a part of it too, if you’d like. Participants craft their own lanterns, lit by battery-operated lights (no flames allowed) and walk along the beach to celebrate the start of the new year. Make your own resolutions and release your intentions for the year with your lantern.
