Car Show, Old-Fashioned Street Dance and Costume Contest in Southport, NC
In the fall a normally vacant building on the edge of downtown transforms into a filling station from a by-gone era. A vintage Texaco gasoline pump advertises gas at 31 cents per gallon (don’t get your hopes up, you can’t fill up here) as it sits just below red, white and blue pennants flapping in the breeze. A ’64 Carolina blue Ford Mustang and a pale yellow ‘56 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible are parked nearby where cruise-in participants check in with the Cape Fear Cruisers. It won’t be long before a procession of classic cars in a rainbow of hues makes their way down Howe Street in Southport to park just before the waterfront. This event, known as Classic Cars ‘n Rock ‘n Roll is a perfect reason to get away to “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” in the fall. Besides the cruise in, there is an old fashioned street dance, dance contest and costume contest. It’s not uncommon to see men dressed as greasers and women in poodle skirts and big colorful glasses. Though the slate of events changes a bit from year to year, it’s a fun-filled event perfect for a long weekend getaway.
