Did you know that there are over 20 species of ghost crabs worldwide? (That’s a lot of crabs.) While you’re here on Oak Island, NC the crab you will mainly see is the Atlantic Ghost Crab. They hatch from eggs and will live an average life span of about 3 years. Ghost crabs live in subtropical areas and are nocturnal creates that burrow in the sand until sunset. They generally eat debris and smaller animals such as bean clams, turtle hatch-lings and mole crabs. The name Ghost Crab is derived from its ability to slightly change it coloring to match the sand around it.

Ghost Crab Hunting:

Hunting these little guys has been a pretty popular beach pastime over the years. Seeing as it’s completely free and fun for the whole family. All you need to hunt Ghost Crabs is a dark night, flashlight and net, so head to the beach as soon as it gets dark. Shine your flashlight and watch them scurry across the sand. When a ghost crab gets caught in a light beam, they freeze for a few seconds before scurrying away.
