What To Listen For

Tropical Storm Watch: Tropical conditions are are possible within the specified area within 48 hours.
Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible within the specified area.

Tropical Depression

A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph (33 knots) or less.

Tropical Storm
A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph (34 to 63 knots)

A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher.

Major Hurricane

A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph (96 knots) or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 pn the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Hurricane Check-List
  • Bring all deck furniture inside.
  • Turn picnic tables upside down
  • Put outside trash cans in the outside shower or storage area.
  • Unplug all appliance except the refrigerator.
  • Set thermostat to the OFF position.
  • Close all blinds and lock all windows
  • Tightly lock and secure all doors.
  • Drop keys off at Oak Island Accommodations on your way off the island.

What to do in the event of a Hurricane?

Oak Island Accommodations and emergency personnel will make every attempt to notify all guests of weather emergencies. Should an evacuation order be issued by the Brunswick County Emergency Management Authority, all guests must collect all belongings and evacuate immediately. Guests must return their keys to Oak Island Accommodations office at 8901 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island NC 28465.

The nearest Red Cross shelter will open in Boiling Spring Lakes at South Brunswick High School located off Highway 87. If you must evacuate please make sure to keep you car filled with gas and have bottled water with you at all times. Be aware that you could encounter strong winds and heavy rains when a hurricane is expected to strike the area.  Do not panic, evacuation orders are issued in time for people to leave safely.

Re-Entry Information

After official notification that danger from a hurricane has ceased, Oak Island Accommodations will inspect every rental property for viability. After inspection, if a property is deemed safe and habitable, guests may recollect the keys from the office and return to the property. If a property is determined to be unsafe, every attempt will be made to re-accommodate you.

Oak Island Accommodations is not responsible for any injuries or losses incurred by an Act of God. OIA does not refund any rent or reimburse for expenses related to a hurricane or other storm system. However trip interruption insurance is available for purchase. Please note that according to Section 42A-36 of the NC Vacation Rental Act, the guest is not entitled to a refund if, prior to taking possession of the property, the guest refuses insurance offered by the rental agent. However if the guest purchases the insurance from the rental agent, then the insurance company will be responsible for any claims.
