The Old Brunswick County Jail

Located in Southport across from the Olde Smithville Burying Ground * Built in 1904, the jail was built to replace the old city jail, which was destroyed by fire * The jail is a two-story brick building which includes two cells, constructed of flat iron bars wrapped together, Each of the two jail cells includes four bunks, There is also a runabout on the second floor of the jail * The jail was used until 1971 when a new jail was built to the rear * The Southport Historical Society has maintained the old jail since 1984

September 16th - May 15th 8am - 5pm
Last ticket sold one hour before closing, please allow two hours to tour the Battleship. (Accept Cash, Visa and/or Master Card. Reservations suggested for groups of 20 or more.

Admission:
Adult - (12 and Over) $9.00
Senior -(65 years and older/active military) $8.00
Child - (6 - 11) $4.50
Infant - (5 and under) FREE


* Self guided tour includes portions of nine decks including gun turrets, inspect the bridge, view the crew's quarters, sick bay, engine room and more * On the deck see one of the remaining Vought Kingfisher float planes * 120+ piece silver service * Roll of Honor Room with the names of the 10,000 North Carolinians who gave their life during World War II. * Tour the Ship's Store * Coca-Cola Canteen * Battleship Park which overlooks historic downtown Wilmington.

Special events include The History-Mystery Tour, a walking tour of some of Wilmington's most famous haunts, held the last weekend of October.

Special Events include ''Colonial Christmas'' in December, craft room demonstrations, open hearth cooking demonstrations are held in the colonial kitchen during special times. Peek into the Dungeon located in the jail.

Tours offered Monday - Friday = 10am - 3:30pm & Saturday 12pm - 5pm. Walking tours every Wednesday and Saturday at 10am.
Special Events include Old Wilmington by Candlelight Tour,a walking tour of some of the most elegant historic homes in downtown Wilmington, held the first Saturday and Sunday in December.

The walls of St. Philips Church (1768) and the foundation of the home of royal governors Arthur Dobbs and William Tryon, are the featured archaeological remains * Numerous other residential foundations of the colonial period are also displayed * The walls of Confederate Ft. Anderson are also visible * The visitor center features an audiovisual program that tells the story of Brunswick Town and Ft. Anderson * Trails through the site * outdoor exhibits that tell the history of the colonial town, the exposed foundations, and Fort Anderson * The visitor center and rest rooms are fully handicap accessible, the trails are accessible with some assistance * Tables are available on the grounds.
* A gift shop, located in the visitor center, has numerous items related to the colonial and Civil War eras * Guided tours are available for scheduled groups; otherwise self-guided tour maps are available for visitors * No admission fees * Donations are accepted!

Hours of Operation:
March through August = 8:00am – 6:00pm
September through November 10:00am – 5:00pm
Closed Thanksgiving Day and December through February.
