New Mayor For Oak Island

Betty Wallace, a retired business woman, was elected to Mayor on November 10th, after a strong victory. Her campaign emphasized improving public access to town information; for example the construction contract for a new town hall was reported at $2.6 million when the actual cost, including debt service, will total much more. Even though the Mayor does not have the power or the ability to set the budget or approve ordinances, she is willing to make recommendations to council and will help to keep the public better informed. December at the Beach

Then join us in December for our Christmas by the Sea Festival, with exciting activities, starting December 2nd, with the Tree Lighting at Dosher Memorial Hospital and Tree Lighting on Oak Island at the Cabana on December 4th. End of Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Season 2009

Turtle nesting season began May 1st. This year the first nest was laid on Oak Island on May 21st and May 29th on Caswell Beach the final nests were laid on August 11th. The first nest started hatching on July 28th. This year the whole island had 83 nests, 10 were lost to the storm named "Bill" and there were 104 False Crawls, which means the female turtle emerged from the water onto the beach but turned back to the ocean without nesting. There were 5485 Loggerhead Turtles counted that swam off into the ocean. This many turtles would not have made a safe journey without the help of dedicated volunteers More...
