In addition to its major port industry, Wilmington also had a large shipbuilding center and produced pine forest products. Wilmington continues to be an active port city. Saturday in the summer you will find a line of cars driving on the beach; it beats carrying everything out to the beach. There is no searching for a spot to put everything in the hot sand and you will always have a place to get under the shade if the sun proves too intense during the course of your stay at the beach.
