LATEST OAK ISLAND NEWS Thursday, January 10, 2008- At yesterday's Town Council meeting, Board members approved with a 3-to-2 vote a permit for the building and operation of a new beach club called Oak Island Club. To be located at 604 Ocean Drive where a motel is currently on site, the club submitted its conditional-use application prior to the Town's moratorium on beach clubs in general. According to the club's owner, construction will take approximately a year, and, once open, the club will serve food and alcohol with an upscale style. It will be open to the public but also offer a high-ticket membership. Beyond that, details remain to be revealed. In perhaps related information about our area, two high-level economists, according to WECT-TV news, have made the statement that southeastern North Carolina (that is us in Brunswick County, if not also Pender County) are doing better economically than many other parts of the nation. They cite the relative strength of the housing market and other factors, predicting a 4.5% growth this year. While that is a substantial economic growth over last year, it pales by comparison to the boom years of 2004-2005. Those of you, especially the baby-boom generation, preparing to find your retirement home in an economically secure environment might want to visit this area, stay with us at Oak Island Accommodations, and while here, check out Brunswick, Pender, and surrounding counties for possibilities. |
