LATEST OAK ISLAND NEWS Wednesday, December 19, 2007- Southport's historic area now features a horse-and-carriage tour through the narrow residential and waterway streets where seamen and their families have worked and lived for generations AND where, on occasion, even pirates hid out in the narrow passages and byways. Though closed for the month of January for a carriage renourishment project, the Smithfield Horse-and-Buggy business lead by Maggie, the beautiful black draft horse, offers holiday tours in December through the old portion of Southport. Today's issue of the Wilmington STAR news carries this story about the festive carriage and the friendly horse Maggie, and this news item has also been an entry in the Southport STATE PILOT recently. This welcome new event in town allows visitors and residents alike a chance to life life in the slow lane, to see the small details obscured by flying by in a car. Not a lecture tour but a pleasure ride, this ride offers something for both young and old alike because all can share in a bonding opportunity to talk, see the sights, and also to meet a very charming family, the Meltons and their pet horse Maggie. The carriage ride also makes a memorable feature for wedding parties, anniversaries, birthdays, and any other special celebration.
