LATEST OAK ISLAND NEWS Friday, December 14, 2007- At the Tuesday meeting this week (December 11), the Oak Island Town Council voted 4-1 to continue efforts toward the purchase of the pier without actually spending any of the Town's money. The Council authorized the mayor and town attorney to pursue outside funding for the pier and to continue working with State Representative Bonner Stiller to apply for grants and state funding, a plan that Stiller proposed recently to facilitate the purchase of the pier. The motion moved forward despite the continued concerns of one Council member, Bob Seidel, who is still troubled about how the Town plans to pay for the operation of the pier, which is just one of the area's properties remaining entangled in lawsuits between a local developer and his financial backers. At the same Tuesday meeting the Council also voted 3-2 to establish a Save-Our-Pier trust fund. Once set up, the fund will provide people with a place to donate money toward the effort to keep the pier a public place. Apparently the ground-swell of public support for the pier is growing; we see public postings of ''Save Our Pier'' signs in a number of local spots. Meanwhile, though the pier closed on December 7th for the season, people are fishing surf-side nearby and enjoying its presence against the winter Carolina sky. On a calm and balmy day (of which we have had so many lately), the pier makes quite a picture stretched out over the fog-covered waves with the sea birds swirling overhead.
