LATEST OAK ISLAND NEWS

Wednesday, December 05, 2007- Yaupon Pier is still attached to Oak Island; that's good news to all who support the pier and watch the news intently to see what its future might be.

Even better news is a plan conceived by State Representative Bonner Stiller who wants to save the pier from developers by applying for and winning funding from a state grant. The money from the grant would assist the Town of Oak Island in purchasing the pier, then leasing it.

In Stiller's plan, the Town would assume ownership of the pier, then lease it to a private party for operation. Revenue earned from the operation of the pier would reimburse the town whatever funds it would expense to purchase the pier in the first place. Leasing should also help calm some of the public concerns that have held up resolution of the pier thus far.

Stay tuned.
