Wednesday, October 10, 2007- The Yaupon Pier is only one of two remaining on Oak Island, NC after the Long Beach Pier was torn down last year. The Yaupon Pier is up for sale as part of a legal battle involving 17 area properties.

Oak Island mayor Johnie Vareen is now trying to save it. The town deposited $185,000 with its offer of $1.85 million, mayor Johnie Vereen said. The offer equals the asking price. A special town meeting was called for Thursday at 4pm to discuss purchasing the property.

Vereen hopes the pier can be one of the first projects for the state’s Waterfront Access and Marine Industry Fund. The state created a $20-million fund to develop and improve commercial waterfront access, and Vereen has asked N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries director Louis Daniel to consider making the pier one of those projects.
